The Mission of Yahweh began with a vision given to Mrs. Helen Gay - everyone calls her Sister Gay. This vision led her to devote her life to helping the poor, beginning in 1961 when she opened her home to women in crisis.  Sister Gay drove her truck through the Memorial area seeking donations.  Soon, many churches and families lent their support to Sister Gay and her flock.  In 1971, a group from a local church met and organized a Board of Directors and the corporate structure to support her work.  A corporate charter was granted by The State of Texas in 1972.  In 1981 construction began on the Main House on Algiers, which today houses our single women.  Currently, The Mission houses up to 85 women and children while Sister Gay and her husband, Fisher, personally adopted 24 unwanted children whom they nurture in their home.

The Mission of Yahweh has a proven record of success as evidenced by much public recognition and many awards from the Houston community.  Several lead profiles about The Mission have appeared on local television stations and in magazines. Sister Gay has been awarded many important humanitarian awards including the Mickey Leland Award, the Savvy Award, and several proclamations by the City of Houston.

The success of The Mission is best understood by our stories of the countless personal triumphs.
